Early in 1988, Spanish composer Llorenç Barber conceived one of the most singular and amazing ways in musical composition of the 20th century: his citizen bells´ concertos, huge symphonies of bells in which whole cities sound at the music of precise and acousmatic minimalist scores firmly coordinated through exact timed indications.

The always large audience meet in parks and squares, roofs and balconies, nearby hills or walk by the streets.

Up to now, Barber has composed over 150 works for different cities in Spain, Mexico, Portugal, England, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Cuba, Slovenia, Poland, Austria and Denmark.

His City Concerts are a deepening and developement in the management of large urban spaces.

A Bells´ concert

On January the 18th, a stunning concert of bells and a fireworks show was held simustaneously to announce the begining of the Year of El Greco.

The Bell Towers of Toledo launched to the sky their sounds, in a poetic and sorrounding gesture. A calling to participation and cellebration.

Opening event

"A concert of bells is more than a simple concerto; it becomes a demonstration of citicenship, a firm postulation to cleanse, heal the public space and dress it with a new splendour, with new ways of communication"
