Ernest Hemingway’s favourite painting was El Greco´s Vista de Toledo, a work he enjoyed visiting in the Metropolitan Museum of New York.

In 1922, the first documentary about El Greco was filmed. Many others followed it, as well as films for both cinema and television. Probably, the most renowned film was the one starring north-American actor Mel Ferrer.

Basque painter Ignacio Zuloaga was one of the main promoters of El Greco´s art. From the flat he shared in Paris with the catalan artist Santiago Rusiñol, he spreead his enthusiasm about El Greco´s works among the cultural environment in the last decade of the XIX century.

TOLEDO WILL GATHER
TOGETHER MOST OF HIS WORKS
The commemoration of the 4th Centenary of the death of El Greco will be a landmark for the history of both the painter and the town of Toledo; the gathering of works by the artist programmed for 2014 will get together most of his artistic production, coming from all parts of the world. There will be three big exhibitions showing works by the artist, which are the centre of the wide programme of El Greco Year, set mainly in Toledo.

Thirteen prestigious international photographers will exhibit in Toledo their vision of the town.
The Greek of Toledo >
March 14th - June 14th
For the very first time, an exhibition devoted to El Greco will take place in Toledo. Over a hundred of his works will be shown in the largest exhibition of the artist´s work to date.
The Library of El Greco >
March 31st - June 29th
In this exhibition, the Museo del Prado will show books once possessed by El Greco. Some of them have handwritten annotations made by the painter.

Twelve glances at El Greco, four hundred years later.
Valladolid, April 29th - July 27th / Madrid, September 10th-November 8th
This exhibition will show the influence of El Greco in Contemporary Art. It will be held in the National Museum of Sculpture (Valladolid) and in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, in Madrid.

This magnificent exhibition, organized by the Museo del Prado, will feature a selection of twenty five works by the Cretan master which will be shown in relation to approximately seventy five paintings and drawings by modern artists.

The last exhibition of the Centenary will gather dozens of
works created in El Greco´s workshop in Toledo.
WHAT ARE EL GRECO VENUES?
One of the main working initiatives is to recover the spaces linked to the artist, which have been called the "El Greco Venues". These locations preserve his works in the original contexts for which they were created.
The opening of these venues to the public will offer a new reading of the artist's work, enriched by his activities within fields such as architecture and sculpture, little-known aspects of El Greco's work that have been scarcely appreciated up until now.
The creation of these venues will provide an extraordinary boost for Toledo's historical and cultural heritage.
